The name "Baker" is significant to the town of Rumney, New Hampshire, because it refers to the Baker River, which runs through the town. The river was named after Captain Thomas Baker, who was one of the first settlers in the area and established a gristmill on the river in the early 1770s. The Baker River is a major tributary of the Pemigewasset River and is popular for fishing, kayaking, and other recreational activities.
